Youth Gambling Awareness Project (YGAP)

Youth Gambling Awareness Project (YGAP)

Our Youth Gambling Awareness Programme is designed to help young people understand the risks associated with gambling.  We do this from a non-judgmental, harm-prevention and minimisation standpoint.  We are aware that many young people gamble, while still underage.  In fact, recent research compiled for us by students at Trinity College Dublin, found that 67% of the secondary school students they interviewed (aged 15-18) had already tried gambling.

The talks are delivered by Tony O'Reilly, co-author of 'Tony10' and fully-qualified addiction counsellor.  We can deliver either in-person or by webinar.

The YGAP Programme consists of a workshop delivered by a facilitator with training in the area of gambling harm-prevention.
  • The workshop can be either 90 minutes or 3 hours in duration, depending on the needs of the school.
  • The aim of of the project is to prevent and minimise gambling-related harm among young people in Ireland.
  • The objectives of the project are to:
    • enhance students' coping skills
    • develop students’ knowledge of randomness and probability
    • improve students’ ability to recognize and avoid problematic behaviours associated with gambling
  • The impact of the project will be an increase in protective factors from gambling-harm, for young people and their loved ones in Ireland.  This will improve wellbeing for individuals, families, schools and the wider community.
  • Additional learning materials will be provided to teachers, upon completion of the workshop, should they wish to continue with further projects on gambling harm-prevention.
  • Ongoing phone and email supports will be provided to teachers, students and parents.
In the 2021/2022 academic year, we delivered to 55 schools in 16 counties around Ireland (ROI) and received excellent feedback from students, teachers and TY coordinators.
